Beyond the Beltway: San Antonio

Continuing our Beyond the Beltway series, today we'll take a look at some unique event locations in San Antonio Texas. As we've posted before, downsizing and holding more events is a smart response to travel budget and time pressures government employees face.

San Antonio's relatively central location in Texas makes it an accessible location for attendees throughout the state and in neighboring states. Texas has the third highest concentration of federal employees in the nation. The state boasts 20 military bases spanning the Air Force, Army, and Navy. In addition to DoD personnel, there are large operations for Veterans Affairs, Treasury Department, and NASA.

In this series we're looking beyond the large national chain hotels and providing some suggestions for some more unique venues that may help draw the local crowd.

  • Sunset Station - this renovated train depot provides a sprawling campus full of a variety of meeting spaces. Located near the Alamo and San Antonio's famed River Walk, it has a central location and a historic feel.
  • Pearl Brewery - The facility was built as a brewery in 1881 complete with a stable for draft horses. Today, the venue bills itself as a culinary destination with restaurants, a farmers market, and shopping. Their stable and studio are dedicated event spaces that can host social gatherings as well as conference-style presentations.
  • St Anthony Hotel - listed as a National Historic Landmark, this downtown hotel provides all of the needed modern amenities for business functions. A variety of meeting spaces can accommodate groups of varying size.
  • Denman Estate - the 5,500 square foot mansion would provide a homey feel for an event.  The facility has numerous breakout rooms as well as space for large group gatherings. It boasts remarkable downtown views from its balcony.
