Military Mobile Power Summit

DSI’s Military Mobile Power Summit allows for civilian and military users across the energy and power spectrum to come together to learn, discuss, debate, and help advance  several key areas within the mobile power community such as:

  1. - Tactical energy harvesting technologies
  2. - Portable power for austere weather environments
  3. - Tactical renewable energy programs
  4. - Biofuels and advanced “drop in” fuels
  5.  -Optimization of microgrids
  6. - Energy integration in data-to-decision: Intelligent power management
  7. - R&D in waste-to-energy conversions for FOBs
  8. - Tactical Shelters and energy storage
  9. - Streamlined  acquisition & commercial item procurement
  10. - Utilizing multiple energy sources

The DoD is the biggest institutional energy consumer in the world, with over 75% deriving from  “operational energy” (OE): the energy required for  training, moving, and sustaining military forces and weapons platforms for military operations.

In the spring of 2014, DoD released it's DoD Energy Policy Directive that is designed to help advance energy security, mitigate costs, and enhance military capability through energy improvements in the years ahead.

With this increased focus within the OSD, there are enhanced  efforts and initiatives underway across all the Services to help transform the mobile power and operational energy needs of our military.

Secretary of the Army John McHugh wrote, “It is Army policy to increase tactical and operational effectiveness through efficient use of energy in all modes, including dismounted, mounted, aviation and base camp/sustainment operations.”

The Navy has been working on developing their “Great Green Fleet”, including strong focus on “drop-in” alternative fuels, and improved engine and shipboard energy efficiencies, while advancing the use of renewable energy sources.

With the Marine Corps turning back to their amphibious / expeditionary roots, they are looking for the ability to deploy expeditionary forces that can operate self-sufficiently in terms of energy (except for vehicle fuel), and innovative ways at harvesting energy and utilizing renewables in a deployed environment.Mobile electric power, field generators  and intelligent power distribution / gridding, improved tactical shelters and more efficient energy storage  will all go towards advancing the effectiveness, security, and efficiency of expeditionary operational energy needs..

The Air Force, for example, is working to reduce consumption of aviation fuel, advancing next-gen turbine engines, and increasing the use of alternative fuels.

Today, the military’s continued investments in renewable energy and power, will aid to preserve lives on the battlefield, protect the nation’s security and save taxpayer money.
