Big Data: The Path to Mission-Centric Analytics

Until recently, federal agencies have tended to view Big Data as a niche application, a focus of data specialists working on unique projects. But that is beginning to change.

Agency executives now realize the value that analytics can bring to their core missions. In fact, a new survey of federal agencies shows that Big Data analytics is becoming an important enabler for federal agencies to successfully meet their mandates. In particular, Big Data has proven to significantly improve the decision-making process, in terms of both speed and quality.

The challenge for agencies is twofold. First, they must understand the benefits of Big Data in their own contexts—how it can help them improve agency operations and reach their goals. Second, they must figure out how to deploy Big Data initiatives given their limited budgets and in-house expertise.
