Training and Education for the Cyber Intelligence Workforce

Cybersecurity education and training programs have proliferated throughout the U.S. in response to the growing hazards of malicious cyber activity, yet only a handful offer a specific course in cyber intelligence. With few specified career paths or systematic curricula in cyber intelligence, the current array of roles, skills, preparation and standards among cyber intelligence professionals is varied at best. Panelists will discuss the way forward to establish a replicable training and education approach that encompasses the technical and nontechnical competencies of the field, as well as other formal and informal opportunities from which the cyber intelligence profession may develop.

Focus Questions

  • What kind of opportunities are there presently for a student interested in cyber intelligence as a career choice?
  • What kind of functional job titles would a cyber intelligence curriculum prepare students for?
  • What is the role of academic institutions in developing cyber intelligence professions?
  • How should a cyber intelligence curriculum be balanced between "hard" and "soft" competencies (eg. intelligence analysis and computer programming)?

About the lecture series

The Cyber Intelligence Discussion Series, co-hosted by The Institute of World Politics (IWP) and the Intelligence and National Security Alliance (INSA), will examine the emergent discipline of cyber intelligence as an integral component of organizational cybersecurity and how the public, private and academic sectors are fostering the development of this nascent field. The discussions, to be held each Thursday in October in recognition of National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), will include remarks by leading professionals from government, the private sector and academia. IWP and INSA encourage attendees to continue the discussion on Twitter with the hashtag #cyberintel.
