Overview:

There are mandatory, elective, and optional topics. These topics are outlined in the specific industry procedures.

Mandatory topics are required and must be conducted for the minimum amount of time indicated. These topics are determined by OSHA and include:

OSHA Orientation
Work in Confined & Enclosed Spaces
Walking/Working Surfaces; ladders, scaffolds, fall protection, etc.
Personal Protective Equipment, all types
Basic Electrical Safety
Fire Protection, Fire Plans, Extinguishers, etc.

Elective topics must be chosen by the Outreach trainer from the list provided in the specific industry procedures. Usually the choices are based on industry, locality, or audience needs. OSHA requires a minimum number of these topics that must be taught and a minimum amount of time that must be devoted to these topics. The lists of elective topics are determined by OSHA, and include:

Hazard Communication/Chemicals
Lockout/Tagout for equipment and machinery
Respiratory Protection
Welding/Hot Work
Material Handling/Rigging
Ergonomics
Blood borne Pathogens
Surface Preparation, Grinding, Blasting, etc.

Optional topics are intended to supplement the mandatory and elective topics. These topics are intended to provide an Outreach trainer with increased flexibility to fulfill Outreach training time requirements. Additional time in mandatory or elective topics is necessary if optional topics are not covered.

Why should you attend?

The growth in the Outreach Training Program from OSHA is a result of industry-wide acceptance and additional training opportunities available through OSHA�s Training Institute (OTI) Education Centers. Many employers use the OSHA Outreach Training Program to provide training for their employees. Groups who have integrated the program into their overall safety and health training plans include the building trades, general contractors, employer associations, insurance companies, and manufacturing firms. Also, other countries have recognized OSHA as the institute providing safety, compliance guidelines and regulations most thoroughly. Therefore, this course is recognized world-wide.

This training program provides basic safety and health information and education. The OSHA Outreach Training Program for the Maritime Industry provides training for workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplaces in the maritime industry, specifically shipbuilding, shipbreaking and ship repair. The U.S. Navy requires this training for all contractors who work aboard a ship, whether in dry dock or under way, including consultants.

This course will help with Risk Management for all companies as well.

Speaker and Presenter Information

Chuck Northam

President, Safety Resources, LLC

He has been a professional Safety Consultant for over 17 years, and been in the safety field for 27 years. He has served as a fire fighter/EMT and has been in the fire service since 1978, currently not active. He has represented safety equipment manufacturers on various products including fall protection, respiratory and confined space. He has experience helping companies with OSHA cases including expert witness testimony and working cases directly with OSHA. He is an authorized instructor for OSHA 10 & 30 hour General Industry, Construction, Maritime (shipyards, marine terminals and Longshoring). He is an instructor for Medic First Aid International on First Aid/CPR/AED. He has provided training to agencies such as US Coast Guard, US Air Force, US Navy, DuPont, Bechtel, Excelon Energy, Merck, NOAA, etc. He provides safety services to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport. He is a life member of a Fire Dept., member of ASSE, NFPA and ABC. He has also worked as a Forensic Investigator with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Maryland. He has extension background developing programs and procedures and providing facility compliance audits.
