Introduction to Radar Pulse Deinterleaving

Signal Interception, classification and identification are the core tasks of radar ES systems. In order to do so, it is necessary that such systems are able to segregate the pulses arriving from the several radars that may be emitting in the environment. Thus, the system must rely on the measurements of a set of primary parameters to form digital words that will characterize each incoming pulse. The digital processing of these words will provide the segregation of the pulses concerning to each individual radar and infer a set of secondary parameters which are seen through time.

This is most of the times quite complex, since there can be several emitters, some with agility, others with high duty cycle and also some spoofers that are there to make the environment a bit more confusing. Moreover, the precision and the accuracy of the measurements will also be limited and uncertainties will always appear.

This webinar will initiate with a discussion about radar signals and their parameters and their measurement. Then it will briefly present the basic architecture of the digital processing unit before introducing the main pulse segregation processes. Next, it will show how PRI and antenna scan parameters can be inferred. Finally, it will provide some considerations about using fuzzy modelling to model the uncertainties of the deinterleaving process.

Speaker and Presenter Information

Cap (Engineer Ret Brazilian Navy) Antonio Dias de Macedo Filho is the President of the Brazilian AOC Chapter (Wild Parrot Roost Chapter). He got his PhD in Antennas and Radar by University College London by November/1996 and has several extension courses in the area of EW and Radar. He has more than 40 technical papers published in these area While with the Brazilian Navy he worked in most activities of the Brazilian Navy concerning Electronic Warfare, including the developments of indigenous ESM and ECM equipments and chaff rockets and launchers.

After he retired, he created his own firm, Alfadelta-Rio Desenvolvimento de Sistemas Ltda. With such firm, he has done consultancy for the Brazilian Navy and for some main local and foreign enterprises, as well as lectured short courses In terms of Academic Activities ,he was professor at some local Universities, and now Coordinates a Special Qualification Course (CQTE) for Sergeants at the Brazilian Navy. He also has delivered several presentations about Future Warfare at AOC EW Europe 2017 (London) , 2018 (Laussane) and at Stockolm (2019) besides EW Singapore (2018) and EW Asia (2019).
