Overcoming Variety and Ambiguity in Data
Variety in data is misspelled names, the same name in different languages, and different ways of saying the same thing. AI-powered innovations, such as cross-lingual semantic search and entity resolution/disambiguation, have matured and now enable analysts to rely on them to accurately process and identify items of interest. Search expands beyond keywords to capture the same ideas expressed with different terms or in different languages.

Speaker and Presenter Information

Headlining HLTCon is Michael Dreeben, a recently retired US Deputy Solicitor General. He was also a member of Robert Mueller’s Office of Special Counsel, where he handled litigation challenging the Office’s authority. He is only the seventh person in US history to argue over 100 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Mr. Dreeben will address corpus linguistics, a new and controversial approach to legal interpretation that makes use of computer-based text analytics to examine the context and usage of language over time, across broad corpora such as “all newspapers”. This new “canon of construction” can expose instances where arguments for interpretations are based on outlandish usages that never existed in the English language prior to a case and certainly did not exist when legislation was drafted.
