The Aging Grid Infrastructure: Threat or Opportunity?

During this Energy and Environment Breakfast, ICF International welcomes Jay Caspary, senior policy advisor to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and member of DOE's Grid Tech Team, who will explore challenging issues facing the electric transmission grid and potential solutions to these problems.

Substantial portions of the grid—including lines, transformers, substations, and more—are reaching a condition that will necessitate their replacement over the next 20 years. At the same time, we must focus on optimal ways to carry out this replacement (e.g., guarding against cyber attacks). We also need to consider how we can harden the grid (so that storms like Sandy will do less damage) and make it more resilient in order to bring it back online when the system goes down. What about preparing to accommodate renewables, smart grid assets, and the emerging distributed resources? All of these objectives sound laudable, but can we do all this effectively, while not imposing substantial tariff increases on utility customers?
