The Federal government is the single largest enterprise in the United States, consuming energy around the clock in support of citizen services, homeland security, disaster response and American warfighters.

Military bases alone have an annual energy bill of $4 billion, supporting over 500 installations in the United States and overseas.  That’s nearly 300,000 buildings covering 2.3 billion square feet of building space.

Agencies today are harnessing new energy technologies to:

  • Reduce energy demand through conservation and efficiency;
  • Increase on-site electricity generation with renewable energy;

  • Increase energy management using microgrids with sophisticated controls; and

  • Pursue facility energy innovation as a catalyst for energy source breakthroughs.

This briefing will explore how government agencies and the military are acting as effective stewards of taxpayer resources through the use of innovation and energy conservation.
