Data-Centric Approaches to Government in the Cloud

Cloud computing has evolved into multiple models that employ both agency, interagency and commercial data center resources.  This can result in complex, hybrid environments where only parts of the infrastructure are under a given agency’s total control.  This raises questions about how to ensure data integrity, availability and safety while also maintaining fast application performance.

This webinar will discuss how agencies can devise strategies for a data-centric approach to cloud computing. It will present information they need to know to gain the benefits of cloud computing in hybrid environments with good data practices in a cost effective way.

We’ll explore:

  • Strategies for protecting data in hybrid cloud/data center environments when data and applications are highly mobile.
  • Use cases such as local data centers and clouds as disaster recovery, or continuity of operations such that if an application fails it spins up in the cloud.
  • Latency with data in multiple locations, use of intelligent caching, keeping data close in an efficient way.
  • Why data has “gravity” while other cloud resources are more easily dialed up and down, and what this means for flexibility when using public clouds.
  • What special techniques or technologies can apply to data portability and flexibility consistent with protection from cyber issues and corruption or non-synchronization.
  • When moving compute loads among agency data centers and commercial clouds, how do you manage data and applications as separate entities.
Learning Objectives:
  • Understand agencies' strategies for hybrid cloud.
  • Explain how agencies are employing continuity of operations procedures.
  • Describe government's approach to securing data.
  • Detailed discussion of maintaining data visibility in hybrid environment.
  • In-depth look at how to move compute loads between data centers and commercial clouds.

* To receive CPE credit you must sign in on time and participate in the surveys to confirm your attendance. Certificates will be e-mailed to registrants. In accordance with the standards of the National Registry of CPE Sponsors, 50 minutes equals 1 CPE.
