Veterans in Society Conference

This year’s conference will focus on the role of the arts, humanities, and social sciences in shaping policy and addressing difficult social issues faced by veterans and their families.  We hope to foster increasingly mature dialogue regarding veterans, which requires recognizing the individual humanity of the people who can sometimes be forgotten behind headlines and statistics. In particular, we are focusing on the role of the arts, humanities, and social sciences in shaping policy and addressing veterans’ issues, recognizing that theatre, film, and other narrative formats present rich possibilities for helping render the complexities of veterans’ experiences.

Speaker and Presenter Information

We will feature a theatrical production by Outside the Wire, a social impact company that uses theater and other media to address pressing public health and social issues, including combat-related psychological injury. We’ll also have a screening of selected scenes of award-winning film Brats: Our Journey Home, the first documentary about growing up military; the film’s writer and director Donna Musil will be present to speak about the film and about today’s military children as veterans of the longest period of American war.
