State of Tech in the I-270 Corridor




bisnow_3.png Biotech has rebounded from the recession faster than most other industries in Maryland and with about 8% of the biotech companies in the country based in Maryland, the future of Maryland's tech scene is bright. Adding to the optimism is recent approval of plans to create a $10 billion, 17.5M SF "Science City" for bioscience research. 

How do the top Maryland tech players envision the future of the I-270 tech corridor? Where will future development occur? Where will companies focus their development & strategic efforts? How will federal and state government assist the sector's growth?

Governor Martin O'Malley, recently named 2010 Governor of the Year by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, will keynote and will be preceded by an accomplished panel of legends including Norm Augustine, retired CEO of Lockheed Martin and for several decades one of the great voices of American technology, and David Mott, former CEO of MedImmune who sold the company for $15.6 billion to AstraZeneca. University of Maryland President Dan Mote and Clark School of Engineering Dean Darryll Pines will help preside.

Dr. Mote has spurred the University of Maryland to lead the state in the development of its high-tech economy, especially in the information and communication, bioscience and biotechnology, and nano-technology sectors. He has greatly expanded the university's partnerships with corporate and federal laboratories and successfully negotiated to bring the first Science Research Park, sponsored by the People's Republic of China, to the College Park area. He has produced more than 300 publications, holds patents in the U.S., Norway, Finland and Sweden, and has mentored 56 Ph.D. students.

Retired Chairman & CEO, Lockheed Martin
As retired Chairman & CEO of Lockheed, the nation's largest defense contractor, and a former under secretary of the Army, Norman is often compared to Bill Gates and former Intel CEO Craig Barrett for his national leadership in technology. He serves on the DHS Advisory Board & served 16 years as a member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. A highly decorated American civilian, his honors include the National Medal of Technology & the DoD's highest civilian award, the Distinguished Service Medal, given to him five times. Norman is a Regent of the University System of Maryland, serves on the board of 4 Fortune 500 companies, holds 18 honorary degrees & is an avid outdoors enthusiast who has dogsled in the Arctic, explored volcanoes in Antarctica, canoed the Boundary Waters of Canada, & stood on both poles of the Earth.

Former CEO, MedImmune
David grew MedImmune from a venture-backed startup into one of the top 5 biotech companies in the world. Ultimately, he initiated & executed the sale of MedImmune to AstraZeneca in June 2007 for $15.6 billion. At the time of David's departure, MedImmune had annual revenues in excess of $1.5 billion, annual R&D in excess of $650 million and 3,000 employees. He is now a General Partner at NEA (New Enterprise Associates) focusing on biopharmaceutical investments.

Dean, University of Maryland A. James Clark School of Engineering 
Under Darryll's leadership, the department was ranked 8th overall among U.S. universities and 5th among public schools in the U.S. News and World Report graduate school rankings. The undergraduate program was ranked 9th during that time. Darryll's current research focuses on structural dynamics, including structural health monitoring and prognosis, smart sensors, and adaptive, morphing and biologically-inspired structures as well as the guidance, navigation, and control of aerospace vehicles.

A market success amongst customers such as Cisco, Motorola, Samsung, and NEC, Motorola purchased Telogy's digital cellular technology and development team for over $40M and Texas Instruments purchased Telogy as the leader in embedded VOIP software for over $700M.

Prior to Intelliworks, Todd held several key executive roles, including EVP of Operations, at Blackboard, a high education technology company. At Blackboard, Todd helped grow the company from $2 MM to over $180 MM in revenue.

Jonathan focuses his practice on information law matters & leads the firm's initiative in this area. He regularly addresses issues involved in the discovery of electronically stored information, as well as issues concerning records retention and privacy policies and practices for clients, especially with respect to emerging issues in areas such as social media and cloud computing. Jonathan is internationally recognized for his work in this area. Notably, he helped found, was the first chair of, and is currently chair emeritus of the highly successful Sedona Conference Working Group on Electronic Document Retention and Production.
