Army National Guard Sustainment Training Exercise
The main event is called the Winston P. Wilson (WPW) Sustainment Training Exercise. It is an annual national marksmanship exercise attended by 338 National Guard participants from 47 of the 54 states and territories. The WPW Sustainment Training Exercise attracts the highest caliber of shooters (both pistol and rifle) among the United States and its allies. The training excercises are physically and mentally challenging, focusing on the development of combat skills in a stressful environment to improve battlefield survivability. Happening concurrently with the WPW Sustainment Training Exercise is the Armed Forces Skill-at-Arms Meeting (AFSAM). This is an international competition that normally has 120 competitors and is attended by National Guard members, other US Armed Forces, and international teams from six countries. They develop a tremendous spirit of competition and camaraderie across the nation and around the globe while validating and sustaining perishable marksmanship skills taught in the Army National Guard's formal schools.
