DOE FEMP New Series! Renewable Energy Technology Applications

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) presents an updated series of training courses focused on Renewable Energy Technology Applications for federal sites.
Renewable energy technologies can help Federal sites meet agency goals and legislative mandates, improve energy security, and reduce environmental impact while efficiently providing electricity, heating, cooling, and other applications. This course will introduce learners to renewable energy technologies, including:
- Wind
- Solar Photovoltaics
- Solar Hot Water Heating
- Solar Air Ventilation Preheat
- Concentrating Solar Power
- Daylighting
- Geothermal and Ground Source Heat Pumps
- Biomass for Heat and Power
- Small Scale Hydropower and Ocean Energy
The course covers sourcing and selecting cost-effective renewable technologies, common implementation considerations, and connecting multiple renewable energy systems together and interconnecting with the grid.
By completing the five course series, series participants will learn to:
- Understand geographic/climate considerations, renewable energy technology capabilities and constraints, and evaluation of various technology options.
- Select the best renewable technologies for building and site needs, considering the latest applications and technical considerations.
- Assess factors to integrate site-specific renewable energy into larger energy systems, such as agency-wide, installation-wide, or community-wide grid systems.
FEMP's eTraining courses are designed for Federal energy and facility managers, but are open to all individuals though the FEMP Training website. They are hosted in partnership with the National Institute of Building Sciences' Whole Building Design Guide.

Speaker and Presenter Information
The instructor for this series is Andy Walker, PhD, Principal Engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. At NREL, Dr. Walker conducts engineering and economic analysis of renewable energy projects for FEMP and other non-governmental clients. Dr. Walker is an instructor and has authored more than 28 book chapters, journal articles, and papers. He holds a bachelor's of science degree, a master's of science degree, and a doctorate degree in mechanical engineering from Colorado State University and is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Colorado.
