Startup Workshop: Doing Business with the DoD

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED

DoD Funding: Where's the Money and How Do I Get it?” is an intense, one-day workshop designed for small businesses who want to work with the Department of Defense but don't quite know where to start - and small businesses who already work with DoD and keep hitting the same brick walls.

The workshop will offer a fast-paced overview of DoD programs and initiatives that support innovation as well as an overview of how DoD develops and buys new technology, considerations to make before submitting ideas, how to get your technology into DoD, and the role of Congress. Throughout the day you will learn the unique language of DoD contracting that allows you to identify and sort opportunities.

Course materials will also be provided - check out the mentors leading the workshop here

 Workshop Topics:

•        How DoD buys things and funds research.

•        How DoD spends money and why it matters if you’re trying to sell to them.

•        Understanding the different types of DoD purchasing mechanisms and how they might impact you.

•        Working with Congress: An overview of the organization of Congressional committee structures that affect the DoD program and budget reviews and how this impacts you.

•        Understanding the DoD Office of Small Business Programs, their role, and assistance programs.

•        SBIR and STTR Programs: Annually, these programs award more than $1 billion in research funds. Over half the awards are to firms with fewer than 25 people and a third to firms of fewer than 10. Historically, a quarter of the companies are first-time winners. Attendees will gain an in-depth understanding of these programs and how to participate.

•        Non-traditional Contracts: You will learn about contracts that are not necessarily subject to the same long process and complex regulations as standard DoD contracts. These may be of particular interest to small businesses who are reluctant to do business with the government because they believe it’s too complex or bureaucratic.
