Conduits, Valves, and Gates

The objective of this course is to provide a general understanding of conduits, valves and gates in the context of the operation, maintenance and design of dams and dam safety. Emphasis will be placed on issues related to the design, construction, and performance of conduits, values, and gates types commonly used at dams. Case histories and practical exercises will be used to enhance learning of the purposes and features of conduits, valves, and gates at dams; common materials; design standards and design considerations; operation and control; performance issues; and maintenance and rehabilitation. This is a BASIC level course and is intended as an introduction for those with a minimal to moderate level of experience in the design, inspection and operation of dams. This course will provide a general understanding of conduits, gates, and valves at dams with an emphasis on design, construction, and performance.

Adam Jones, P.E. is a Senior Civil Engineer with more than 37 years of experience in the design and construction management of hydroelectric and heavy industrial projects. For more than 27 years, Mr. Jones has worked almost exclusively in the hydroelectric industry, concentrating on dam safety inspections, stability analyses, and project rehabilitations associated with dam safety programs. He has served as an Independent Consultant or has assisted in the performance of a number of dam safety inspections, has served as lead structural and geotechnical engineer for a number of project rehabilitations and upgrades, and also as Project Manager for multi-disciplinary project teams.

Senior Civil Engineer

Ralph Nelson, P.E. is a Senior Civil Engineer with more than 34 years of experience as a civil/structural, hydraulic engineer in the planning, licensing and permitting support, and design and construction of hydroelectric and industrial projects. He has served as Project Manager, Project Engineer, and Engineer for feasibility studies, environmental studies, hydrologic and hydraulic studies, provided engineering support for licensing and permitting activities, performed and reviewed designs in steel, wood, and concrete, and performed or coordinated surveys and construction layout.
