Design Sciences Series: Digital Engineering: Digital Twin

The ASNE Design Sciences Series of workshops and conferences explore the emerging science of design methods, processes and tools for the successful design of naval engineering projects. Naval ships and systems are increasingly becoming cyber-physical systems as part of a broader trend commonly called the fourth industrial revolution (or Industry 4.0). The digital engineering of these cyber-physical systems cannot be executed without a digital thread enabled model based environment which goes well beyond the use of today’s design tools and methods such Computer-aided Design (CAD) and Product Model based digital repositories.

Indeed, while these computer-based tools and databases will continue to be used in the design process to progressively develop the product description, operational plan, production plan and support plan, a new aspect of Industry 4.0 is the incorporation of a digital twin. Digital twins have many potential applications in ship design, control of shipboard systems, operations and maintenance. A digital twin consists of integrated descriptive and dynamic models of a system that can be updated in real time based on sensor updates from the physical system or operator input. Before the physical instantiation of a ship, the digital twin can be employed to evaluate total ship performance, as well as test component and systems using hardware in the loop (HIL) simulations and control hardware in the loop simulations (CHIL). Once a ship is operational, the digital twin can be used onboard for many functions including system transition planning, reconfiguration after damage, optimal control, condition based maintenance, and crew training. Ashore, the digital twin can help in functions such as maintenance planning, forensic investigations, and process improvements.

Because the application of a digital twin within the context of digital engineering across the product lifecycle of a naval ship includes more than can be adequately covered in a single workshop, this third conference focuses on digital twin basic concepts and the foundational technologies necessary to develop and use the digital twin for conceptual through detail design. Future workshops are anticipated to explore the application of digital twins in production and in-service.
