10:45 am Concurrent Sessions

Virtualization Trends

There are some exciting virtualization trends (both server and desktop) being driven by a variety of factors, including teleworking, mobility, storage needs, cloud computing, green technology, maintenance, cost control and overall security. This session discusses proven strategies for implementing a successful, scalable and affordable virtualized environment.

Mobile Technologies: Driving Change in Government Services and Applications

The global market for wireless applications - which barely existed just a few years ago - has already experienced downloads in the tens of billions. Not surprisingly, pressure is quickly mounting on government IT organizations to be more proactive in providing mobile services, devices and secure applications. This session focuses on how to meet the challenges - and opportunities - that lie ahead.

Modernizing Systems and Applications

Given an uncertain financial outlook, IT shops will (again) be asked to do even more with even less. Where to begin? One place to start is by modernizing core enterprise applications and software platforms. This session focuses on trends, possibilities, tools, techniques, resources and alternatives for transforming legacy systems.

Business Intelligence and Effective Decision-making

There is no shortage of information available to government organizations. The challenge is accessing, analyzing and presenting it in ways that lead to better, more relevant decision-making. In this economy, nothing could be more important. This session discusses successful approaches that can be emulated and adapted for almost any organization.

Jack Mortimer head shot
Workplace of the Future

Jack Mortimer, Government Technology magazine

In American history, the single greatest shift in the workplace was driven by the Industrial Revolution as jobs moved from outdoors to indoors. Since then, much has remained the same except for further technologization. True, technology has continually and dramatically affected how we work. Yet most people, especially in government, still work in standard office environments. But that's changing. Is it a new "revolution"? Almost certainly. The only question is to what degree. This session looks at recent research and predictions by Government Technology magazine into the changing workplace. After more than a century of the same basic work environment, is it time to blow up the model?

1:30 pm Afternoon Break and Refreshments

1:50 pm Concurrent Sessions

Cloud Computing - Known Flavors

The definition of cloud computing is still a bit "foggy". There are external clouds, internal clouds, and even hybrids. Technology companies offer an almost infinite variety of cloud services. So it's not easy to get a handle on what it all means. This session clears the air on the various aspects of cloud computing and their impact on government operations.

Controlling and Securing Mobile/Personal Devices

The demand for mobile access is exploding at rates previously unimagined. Organizations can expect to be overwhelmed by a wave of personal and portable devices in the workplace as workers insist on being able to work just about anywhere - and using their favorite devices regardless of what policies might say. This session looks at how to find the right balance in maintaining control and security yet allowing easy access, convenience and information sharing.

Open Government vs. Privacy, Security and Accountability

Transparency and open government are currently two of the highest federal priorities. Right on track, Missouri is working to make a wide variety of information available and accessible to citizens. This session discusses trends, standards, lessons learned and the role of technology in creating a more open culture.

IPv6 - Next Generation Internet Protocol

For the past 30 years, IPv4 has been the publicly used Internet Protocol and is the foundation for most Internet communications. With the rise in the number of mobile devices, computers and users, the old system of addressing networked devices is almost exhausted. IPv6 allows for virtually unlimited numerical addresses, but switching from IPv4 to IPv6 is not something to approach lightly. This session discusses the factors involved in successfully navigating the transition.

2:50 pm Break

3:10 pm Concurrent Sessions

Cloud Computing - How Do I Get There?

The cloud, whether external or internal, offers an infrastructure with tremendous scalability, flexibility and potential savings. But there are definite concerns, especially with security, privacy and control. This session takes a look at what needs to be done to prepare for the cloud and how - and if - it can be used safely, effectively and economically.

Innovation and Success in Missouri

Innovation is alive and well in Missouri, demonstrating that it is possible to accomplish great things with limited resources. This session offers several thought-provoking initiatives that are sure to inspire, motivate, and get the wheels turning about what might be possible in your own organization.

Social Media in Today's Government

The use of social media in government is no longer a question of ‘if', but ‘how much'. Instead of putting on the brakes, it's time to embrace the possibilities. True, there are always risks and concerns, but the payoff is huge - not just for improved service provision but also for public relations. This session looks at ways to use social networks to best advantage while still maintaining a sensible amount of control.

4:10 pm Executive Reception
