Surviving the Service: Cardiac, Cancer, Behavioral Threats & The Role of Early Detection

Members of the uniformed services have unique occupational health risks. Tragically, each year countless men and women of law enforcement, fire and rescue service and EMS lose their lives or suffer permanent disability from entirely preventable occupational health risks. Largely, this occupational risk includes fatal cardiovascular events.

Further, as many as one out of every three members of our society will battle cancer in their lifetime and this number higher as if the mortality for firefighters. Finally, there are a wide spectrum of behavioral health diseases including occupational suicide risk. The constellation of behavioral health risks includes sleep disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress injury, chemical dependency, anxiety and uniformed service member suicide.

Fortunately, these occupational risks to member survival are identifiable through comprehensive early detection.
