About Elmendorf AFB, Fort Richardson, and Hosts

Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson Army Post are officially now on their way to become a joint base. The transition to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson began January 31, 2009 and will be fully united by October 2010. Elmendorf and Fort Richardson are among 26 other installations across the country being combined into 12 joint bases.

Elmendorf Air Force Base, adjacent to Anchorage, is the largest Air Force installation in Alaska and home of the Headquarters, Alaskan Command (ALCOM), Alaskan NORAD Region (ANR), Eleventh Air Force (11 AF), and the 3rd Wing. Elmendorf AFB supports and defends U.S. interests in the Pacific and around the world by providing units capable of worldwide air power projection and meeting Pacific command’s theater staging and throughput requirements.

Fort Richardson is headquarters for United States Army Alaska (USARAK), a subordinate unit of United States Army Pacific Command. The primary combat unit at the Fort is the 1st Battalion (Airborne), 501st Infantry, which along with smaller supporting engineer, signal, military intelligence and artillery units, form a readily deployable combat task force in support of the 1st Brigade, 6th Infantry Division (Light) headquartered at Fort Wainwright. The largest military tenant at Fort Richardson is the Alaska National Guard, with facilities at Camp Carroll and Camp Denali.

The 3rd Communications Squadron provides base-wide service and guidance for all communications and computer systems requirements. The 611 ACOMS serves as the focal point for all command, control, communications, and computers (C4) support for ANR and 11 AF. Key functions include theater long-haul communications, radar systems communications, circuit management, network operations and configuration control. Additionally, the unit performs Meteorological Navigational (METNAV) certifications for airfields throughout the theater, as well as Defense Red Switch Network, Communications Security (COMSEC) and frequency spectrum management support. In addition to providing communications planning and programming support to the three O&M contracts, the 611 ACOMS also manages $22 million in communications requirements. The 611 ACOMS also provides direct communications support to the 611 AOC - 24/7 battle staff crisis action operation center.

The mission of the 59th Signal Battalion is to provide responsive and reliable strategic C4 and sustaining base information systems support to United States Army Alaska (USARAK), Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and other tenant organizations in Alaska. They also serve as the proponent for information services policy and programs. DOIM and strategic signal services are provided for all U.S Army units in Alaska. The unit consists of HHD, 59th Signal Battalion at Fort Richardson (FRA), the 507th Signal Company at Fort Wainwright (FWA), and a DOIM Detachment at Fort Greely (FGA).
