Dan Thurmon HeadshotOff Balance on Purpose

    Dan Thurmon
, Author and Peak Performance Coach

Life is an off balance proposition. Achieving balance - a perfect symmetry - is an unrealistic objective. You will never get there! Life is in constant motion, and priorities and resources change all the time. That's why we need to embrace and initiate off balance moments in order to successfully engage life in all its aspects. In this dynamic keynote address, Dan Thurmon uses highly visual and creative means to demonstrate that "off balance" is how we learn, grow, excel and fully experience what is happening around us. It's tough out there right now. The question is: Are you thrown off balance in response to your world or are you off balance on purpose?

    Leadership and Succession Planning
    York Room

Developing effective leadership using a consistent talent management program at all levels across the organization can return significant business value. To identify, attract, fill, and retain leadership talent, government needs to focus on hiring strategies, employee development, and career and succession planning. Today's economic environment is forcing organizations to maximize what they've already got in terms of both people and technology and succession planning assesses the current situation to plan the workforce of the future as workers leave due to retirement, attrition, and other factors.

Greg McNeal, Chief Information Officer, State of Maine

Richard Thompson, Chief Information Officer, University of Maine

    Transparency and Open Government
    Washington Room

Transparency and open government are high priorities. The guiding principle is that actions taken and information maintained by government is a public asset, and whatever information you store may have value to the public. The ramifications on IT systems, policies and personnel can be significant. This session will address these issues and provide an overview of the state of Maine's efforts to improve transparency and increase citizen access to data.

Lauren Farese, Senior Director, Sales Consulting, State and Local, East Coast, Oracle

    Cloud Integration Challenges
    Sagadahoc Room

Government entities around the nation, including Maine, are currently implementing cloud services.  This session will look at how the cloud changes the way that governments do business including: what are the adoption challenges in implementing cloud applications; what to consider when procuring and contracting for the cloud; and how to measure your success. You will not want to miss this informative, fast paced and timely session!

Victor Chakravarty, Enterprise Architect, Office of Information Technology, State of Maine

Brennan Preine, Cloud Business Development Executive, IBM

    Health Care Reform and IT
    Piscataquis Room

Though health care reform has had its share of controversy, the one thing on which everyone agrees is that the impact on government IT will be enormous. Are systems ready? Is enough progress being made on interoperability and information exchange? What tools and strategies are showing the best results? This session discusses current developments and how to prepare for the changes ahead.

Shared Services: Best Practices and Opportunities
    York Room

If there is a silver lining to tough times, it's that government organizations have no choice but to break down barriers in order to foster collaboration and resource sharing. So it's no surprise that current economic pressures are bringing about some remarkably creative leveraging of systems, applications and resources. This session sets out to inspire and evoke new ideas by providing firsthand looks at some ground-breaking collaborations, innovations and opportunities that go well beyond traditional concepts and boundaries from the State of Maine.

Moderator: Dorene Gerrish, Director of Special Projects, Office of Information Technology, State of Maine

Steve Campana, Director, Systems Integration and Governance, State of Maine

    Enterprise Data Sharing
    Washington Room

Governments are increasingly expected to rise to the challenge of sharing data horizontally and vertically across agencies/jurisdictions as well as to the public. There is a tremendous payback in the reduction of duplicated efforts. But where do you start and who should drive it? Who owns the data? How do you keep it secure? What standards should be used? This session looks at current trends, strategies and successes.

Dan C. Boutilier, Director of Information Systems, City of Portland

Larry Veino, Data Center Solutions Practice Manager, Presidio Networked Solutions

    Mobile Technologies: Driving Change

Experts predict that demand for mobile access will explode by 2012. The global market for wireless applications - which barely existed just a few years ago - is growing day by day. Not surprisingly, pressure is mounting on government IT organizations to be more proactive in providing mobile services and applications. This session looks at workable strategies, affordable opportunities and features some of the ways government workers are using mobile apps.

Lt. Brian Scott, Commanding Officer, Maine State Police Traffic Safety Unit

Virtualization Trends - Desktops and Applications

Virtualization may not be a brand new concept, but some exciting new trends are being driven by a variety of factors, including teleworking, mobility, storage needs, cloud computing, green technology, maintenance, cost control and overall security. As a result, governments are increasingly turning to virtualization to reduce expenses and increase efficiencies. This session focuses on the latest tools and strategies.
