Procedural Justice: Respect, Transparency and Neutrality while Giving People a Voice

Procedural Justice, at its core, is rooted in treating all people with respect, transparency, and neutrality while providing them with a voice. These principles are integral in increasing the public’s perception of police legitimacy. Research shows that when communities view police authority as legitimate, they are more likely to cooperate with the police and obey the law. Establishing and maintaining police legitimacy promotes the acceptance of police decisions and makes it more likely that police and communities work together to solve crime.

This webinar will present evidence of procedural justice’s effectiveness nationwide and present both the benefit to the community as well as officer safety and wellness.

Equally, if not, more importantly, the principles of procedural justice should be practiced internally and embedded into police practice from within the department. Research overwhelmingly shows that departments that practice procedural justice are more likely to effectively implement them in the community. The key to procedural justice is to recognize that it is not a stand-alone training. It is an organizational philosophy. Police leaders of all levels will face challenges, but by establishing core values, modeling these behaviors, and viewing this process through the lens of policy, hiring, training, and communication, departments can build a strong foundation that increases community trust and organizational morale.
