The advent of 5G technology opened a new world of possibilities, enabling applications such as autonomous vehicles, the Internet of Things IoT), and smart cities. The next-generation communications standard already in development – 6G – is a revolutionary technology that will provide unprecedented speeds and low latency, making it perfect for innovative use cases such as smart homes, autonomous transportation systems, healthcare, and even with holographic media, sensing and 3D mapping applications.
But using 5G requires agencies to do some groundwork in advance, such as identifying whether it will be used by mobile devices such as laptops and cellphones, or will the agency want to include more specialized devices, such as sensors, health monitors, or warehouse robots. Utilizing 5G also requires a geographic assessment; in rural areas, agencies need to determine the level of 5G coverage.
Learning Objectives:
- Outline the potential challenges and solutions in implementing 6G technology in industrial and governmental sectors
- Understand the role of bandwidth availability and how its allocation affects the evolution of digital communications from today’s 4G LTE to 5G and from there to 6G
- Review the impact of 5G on cybersecurity and how it may change in moving to 6G
- Evaluate how the evolution from 5G to 6G might impact data privacy and security in government and industry
