School Safety Symposium

School Safety Symposium

Acts of violence are occurring every day in our communities.  Unfortunately schools are not immune from these senseless and seemingly random events that continue to occur across our nation.  School administrators, teachers, parents and students all have roles to play in preventing acts of violence.  When disaster does strike all school personnel must know and understand the roles they have in order to respond appropriately to minimize the loss of life and the psychological trauma that follows extreme events.  Schools are part of the larger community, and the entire community must respond in a coordinated fashion to rescue students and staff.  The reunification of students and parents is but one example of what must be planned for in advance with community partners.

Why You Should Attend

The one common refrain from schools and communities that have suffered horrific loss of life has been, “I did not think it could happen here!”  Small towns, suburbs, elementary and junior highs are not exempt from acts of violence and natural disasters.  Successful management of emergencies can only be accomplished through effective and pre-established plans and procedures.  This symposium offers you the opportunity to learn from experts in the field of school safety and emergency management in order to gain the necessary information to prevent, respond and recover from any event.  Each attendee will be able to hear presentations, ask questions and leave with a toolkit of materials to take home with you to jump start your planning.   It is highly recommended that, at a minimum, teams of two people attend so they can return home with a partner who understands the information and with whom joint planning can begin.
