On June 2, 2026, an Executive Order on Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security made one thing clear: the federal government's Artifiicial Intelligence agenda is no longer just about adoption. It is about hardening systems against an adversary threat that is evolving as fast as the technology itself.

The executive order directs the Committee on National Security Systems, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and Treasury to prioritize the cyber defense of government information systems and facilitate access to cybersecurity services for critical infrastructure operators.

At the same time, federal agencies are now embedding Model Context Protocol (MCP) within established frameworks like the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) Risk Management Framework, Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) standards and DevSecOps practices, extending zero trust principles into the agentic layer so that AI agents validate permissions at every step of execution, not just at initial invocation.

NIST's Center for AI Standards and Innovation launched the AI Agents Standards Initiative in February 2026, the first U.S. government program dedicated to explicitly the agentic AI security. While the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) proposed adapting identity and authorization frameworks for autonomous agents, agencies and contractors are already behind the curve.
