Responding to Crisis: How One City Navigated a Cybersecurity Event

Apr 8, 2026

Virtual / Online

FEDINSIDER

In the public sector, a security incident is more than a technical hurdle; it is a test of organizational resilience and community confidence. While many local governments operate in a state of reactive defense, the most resilient municipalities are shifting their strategy to treat identity as the new perimeter.

Many local governments face the same hurdles: complex legacy systems, lean IT teams and the constant threat of data breaches. This webinar provides a blueprint for leadership to move beyond “fixing what’s broken” and start building a proactive defense that safeguards both employee and citizen data.

Learning Objectives:

  • Outline the strategic decision-making process behind providing a unified identity layer
  • Delineate ways that municipalities can scale security expertise rapidly without the overhead of a massive internal team
  • Develop practical metrics to measure improved security performance
  • List practical steps for using identity management as a shield against future threats, ensuring long-term stability and public trust

As government agencies and educational institutions accelerate digital transformation, they face a growing wave of sophisticated cyber threats—many driven by or targeting emerging AI technologies. From credential phishing to identity-based lateral movement, today’s attackers are faster, stealthier, and more coordinated than ever.

Join Okta, Zscaler, CrowdStrike, Rubrik and AWS to hear from industry experts as they discuss how AI is being used on both sides of the threat landscape—and how integrated solutions can detect, contain, and stop cross-domain attacks before they do damage. We’ll go beyond frameworks to examine real-world use cases and show how identity-powered defenses can work across your ecosystem to deliver proactive protection.

This event features an inclusive panel discussion led by Okta, Zscaler, CrowdStrike and AWS. What you will learn:

  • Strategies to improve public engagement while optimizing operations in government and education.
  • Real-life scenarios where AI-powered, integrated tools were used to detect and prevent sophisticated identity-based attacks.
  • How to safeguard the entire workforce lifecycle—ensuring a secure user experience while enhancing threat detection and response.

Following the event, we hope you will join us for networking and light refreshments.

Washington, DC

This event will be a hybrid event consisting of vendor demonstrations and speaking sessions. The demos will be applicable to the Cybersecurity session topics. It will be promoted internally to the EXIM population and the Department of VA employees located at this location and across the street at the main VA HQ will also be invited.

About EXIM (from the EXIM.gov website):

The Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) is the official export credit agency of the United States. EXIM is an independent Executive Branch agency with a mission of supporting American jobs by facilitating the export of U.S. goods and services.

When private sector lenders are unable or unwilling to provide financing, EXIM fills in the gap for American businesses by equipping them with the financing tools necessary to compete for global sales. In doing so, the agency levels the playing field for U.S. goods and services going up against foreign competition in overseas markets, so that American companies can create more good-paying American jobs.

Because it is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States, EXIM assumes credit and country risks that the private sector is unable or unwilling to accept. The agency's charter requires that all transactions it authorizes demonstrate a reasonable assurance of repayment; EXIM consistently maintains a low default rate and closely monitors credit and other risks in its portfolio.

It is widely recognized that the introduction of AI tools is a two-edged sword when it comes to cybersecurity. Attackers, whether profit-driven hackers or hostile nation-states, are using AI to launch faster, wider-spread and more sophisticated attacks, including AI-generated phishing and spear phishing emails, malware capable of adapting to changes in defensive responses, and deepfakes that are very hard to detect.

State and local agencies are attractive targets, since there are many more of them and often do not have the financial or IT resources of federal agencies.

This makes state and local agencies’ use of AI in cyber defense critical – AI tools can operate at machine speed and scale and adapt in response to evolving threats. These tools can significantly improve threat detection and intelligence by identifying anomalies and patterns signaling attacks under way; automating incident responses such as isolating compromised devices and resetting credentials; using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to flag sophisticated phishing and social engineering attacks; and prioritizing vulnerabilities to emphasize the most critical risks.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify available AI tools to determine which best fit the security needs of your agency
  • Review ways to integrate AI cybersecurity into existing defenses
  • Understand the nature and magnitude of the threats posed by AI-empowered attacks
