Rail Industry Fundamentals



This 2-day intensive course is designed to equip newcomers to the rail industry with a comprehensive overview of all the key aspects of their new field.

From the basics of ‘what is a train’ to advanced concepts found in complex rail systems, the course addresses railway terminology, components of the railway, urban and freight railways, safety, rail operations, and economics of the rail industry.

Participants will walk away with an understanding of the physical aspects of railways, railway concepts and jargon, points of difference in railway practice in different states, current nationwide initiatives in safety management and regulation, and future opportunities and challenges for the industry.

Overall participants should be able to recount an informed and well-rounded understanding of the rail industry and its importance as a transport mode in the Australian context.

The course is designed to be intimate and interactive, featuring opportunity for question and answer sessions relevant to the participants’ specific requirements, as well as exercises and activities that help participants embed and apply their learning.
