Federal agencies face ever growing volume and diversity in their data. And they’re being asked to do more with the data they do have. Data must be more open, too, such as the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act 2014, signed into law on May 9, which requires federal agencies to publish their spending data in a standardized, machine-readable format that the public can access through USASpending.gov. Roughly 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years, from devices such as censors used to gather climate information, posts to social media sites, digital pictures and video, purchase transaction records, and cell phone CPS signals.

Enterprise Data Management is moving beyond established warehousing or extract-transform-load practices. The trend is toward logical data warehousing strategies that include different mechanisms and tools. In a world where big data has entered into common practice, and 80 percent of data is unstructured, agencies need fresh database technologies and practices. A panel of federal experts will discuss their data strategies and some of the approaches they are taking to deal with open data and big data.
