Making the Private Cloud Real

In this roundtable discussion with federal IT pros, InformationWeek Government will explore the opportunities and challenges of creating private clouds in government data centers.

Federal CIO Vivek Kundra wants government agencies to adopt cloud computing as a way of cutting costs, gaining efficiencies and quickly introducing new capabilities to federal employees and the public. Commercial cloud services are one way to do that, but government IT managers are concerned about security, privacy protection, service reliability, data storage, and data ownership in the public cloud. Some agencies view private cloud environments as a lower risk alternative.

Topics of discussion will include:

  • Where does cloud computing fit into agency IT planning?
  • What are some of the key differences between public clouds and private clouds?
  • What are the potential advantages to federal agencies in private clouds?
  • How does an agency convert an existing data center into a cloud computing environment?
  • What are potential obstacles to effective implementation of private clouds?
  • Which cloud models, and which types of cloud applications, are of greatest interest?
  • What factors (i.e. cost savings, on-demand access) are driving the business case for private clouds in government?
  • How will FedRAMP and other government initiatives influence agency adoption of private clouds?
