Shipyard Safety and Familiarization
This event qualifies for 4 PDH
Working in a ship or repair yard is a dynamic environment. Shipyard Safety and Familiarization is a four hour course that introduces professionals to basic shipyard organization and safety practices. The course is designed to familiarize personnel entering the industry. It discusses organization and safety from both a vessel and shipyard perspective. The course is designed for new port engineers, project managers and industry personnel. The four modules of the course are as follows:
- Introduction to the Shipyard Environment
- Walking the dock floor
- Work permits
- Addressing abnormal conditions
Speaker and Presenter Information
Instructor Bio: Brian Ackerman is an Associate Professor of Marine Engineering at United States Merchant Marine Academy. He has fourteen years’ experience as Chief Engineer on several vessels and twenty years’ seagoing experience.
Brian has served as Chief Engineer, Project Chief Engineer and/or Mechanical Lead for vessel dry dockings/conversions, various vessel repair periods, vessel reflags, and vessel reclassifications. Additionally, he has served as technical consultant for vessel/marine related projects. Brian is a co-author/author of several publications including an International Maritime Organization (IMO) Circular.
He is a former Service/Sales Account Manager for Wartsila North America. Brian holds the rank of Captain, United States Naval Reserve. He is a 1990 graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy with a Bachelor’s of Science in Marine Engineering and has a Master’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Haven.
