Critical Intersection: Knowledge Management and Search

This seminar features Dr. Mark Addelson of George Mason University Graduate School of Public Policy, presenting Talk and Tools: The Terrible Twins of Knowledge Work and Knowledge Management and Portal Solutions' Chief Architect and noted Search expert, Val Orekhov presenting Search for Tomorrow: Effective Enterprise Search and Contextual Knowledge.

Knowledge Management (KM) is a complex topic that has generated much interest in recent years. There are two key elements at the core of a successful relationship--the knowledge worker and technology. Knowledge workers get things done by talking.  This is how they share knowledge in meetings, offices, and corridors, on the phone, and by email and texting.

But, without portals, search capabilities, and other technologies to help them access information, find documents, and connect with others who can help them, they wouldn’t get very far. In the hands of knowledge workers, ‘talk’ and ‘tools’ are completely complementary. However, even if they recognize this, organizations have a hard time ensuring that talk and tools ‘play well’ together. Too little emphasis on talk means the tools fail to live up to their hype and knowledge workers often fall short of what they and others expect them to deliver.

In Talk and Tools: The Terrible Twins of Knowledge Work and Knowledge Management Dr. Addelson will explore the intimate relationship between talk and tools, explaining why organizations struggle to see things this way. He'll also consider what it takes to achieve the kind of balance between the two that knowledge workers need in order to do good work.

In his presentation Search for Tomorrow: Effective Enterprise Search and Contextual Knowledge noted Search and SharePoint expert Val Orekhov will explain the need to view Search as a key element of technology to create effective tools for knowledge management. SharePoint has tremendous KM capabilities, but user adoption of any tool is at the core of its success. Now more than ever effective Search is surfacing as the key to driving that adoption.

Val will outline types of search currently available for the Enterprise, and how to identify the best alternatives for your organization or agency. He will underscore the need to reframe the view of a well-designed Search initiative from a 'nice-to-have' to an essential, equally weighted component of any KM technology initiative. By proper integration of Search, your users will get relevant information when they need it.

This is a free event designed for those involved in managing or undertaking KM and technology programs, and for CIOs,CTOs, and technology professionals who need to understand the implications for the organization.
