Officer Safety and Wellness...Innovative Approach Leverages Technology to Help 24/7

The number of officers who died in the line of duty in 2020 was the highest level of loss in almost 50 years, with much of the increase attributable to COVID-19. As we continue to deal with the pandemic, there’s an equally deadly threat to officers which has long been on the minds of law enforcement officials: police officer suicides. Tragically, the number of police suicides each year often exceeds line-of-duty deaths and leaders have long sought a way to proactively provide help.

The combined efforts of a committed police chief and a noted police psychologist have resulted in a program that empowers officers to help themselves with an always available smartphone app while providing confidential professional help when needed. Overall, the approach is changing minds and changing culture.

Panel of experts: Noted Police Psychologist Dr. David Black will provide an overview of the problem and ways that law enforcement leaders can identify and address officer mental health. Police Chief John Carli will explain how his agency has implemented some of these strategies, using mobile tools, to improve officer safety and wellness in their agency.
