The Art of Manipulation: How to Recognize it (and What to do About it)

Jail correctional officers, prison staff, and juvenile staff work inside facilities where operations are governed by policies and procedures. All staff, both sworn and non-sworn, must keep a step ahead of the inmates and their con-games and schemes. Inmates will attempt to circumvent corrections staff authority and create cracks in the security network.

While officers and staff may think that all is well and operations are running smoothly, inmates devise very subtle ways to pull ‘fast ones’ on us. The inmate’s main tool is manipulation.

This presentation will discuss ways that staff can combat this, learn how inmates ‘do time;’ learn to resist inmate manipulation and how to maintain and not cross professional boundaries. Actual case studies that have resulted in inmates winning and staff losing will be closely examined.

By attending this online seminar, attendees, both sworn and non-sworn, will:

  • Understand the lifestyle and culture of the criminal offender and how they want to do time on their terms;
  • Identify methods criminals use to manipulate staff, using several actual case studies; and
  • Learn several ways to guard against being manipulated, using the ‘CHUMPS Approach.’
