Beyond the Blue Light System: Three Imperatives for Holistic Campus Safety
The recent national conversation on race and policing – combined with the global pandemic and escalating demand for mental health support – has elevated student, faculty, and staff concerns about campus law enforcement and safety more broadly. This has put new pressures on campus leaders to balance safety obligations and risks with stakeholder needs and preferences. To effectively navigate these pressures, leaders need to start by taking a step back and asking themselves and their campuses a different set of questions than they have in the past: What does “safety” mean to our diverse campus community? How can we foster a safe and inclusive campus environment for all stakeholders? What types of investments, structures, and staff are needed to achieve this? Who are our key partners for creating a safe campus, and when and how can we best leverage them?
Sessions
During this session, campus leaders will have the opportunity to begin exploring and discussing these questions with peers. We will also share lessons learned from early movers and strategies for transitioning to a more holistic and stakeholder-centric campus safety approach.
- Evolving stakeholder preferences and pressures on campus safety and police
- Strategies and considerations for facilitating productive conversations about re-envisioning campus safety
- Ways to align organizational structures and staffing with today’s campus safety needs
