Environmental Site Design Using Innovative Storm Water Systems
Nonpoint source runoff control and storm water quality treatment design has become one of the fastest growing segments of both landscape architecture and civil engineering professional practice. Our speaker, Dr. Kays, has been one of the national leaders in creating new out-of-the-box integrated water management systems for both suburban and urban areas. He will present some unique strategies that can be applied to existing urban areas or be implemented with new construction. Thereby the urban sites and their landscapes becomes high capacity, cost effective, and decentralized storm water systems. You will learn why many water quality best management practices (BMP's) do not work well, why end of the pipe BMP solutions are old school, and why his innovative concepts are so counter-intuitive that some say they are revolutionary. You will learn the basic design concepts that you can implement on projects in your metropolitan area.
Learning Objectives:
You will be able to discuss site-scale green storm water systems.
You will be able to review the advantages of green storm water systems.
You will be able to explain synergistic integration of green storm water design in design of urban sites.
You will be able to discuss designing the newest approaches for urban sites.
Agenda
Introduction to Site-Scale Green Storm Water Systems
- Site-Scale Green Storm Water Systems – Involve the Use of Cost Effective Decentralized Green Strategies That Can Be Applied Across an Entire Site; the Strategies Involve the Use of New Research on Enhanced Infiltration, High Rate Infiltration, and Filtration Methods to Meet Water Quality Standards
- Purpose of Green Storm Water Systems
- Advantages of Green Storm Water Systems
- Concept of Site-Scale Green Storm Water Systems Is to Create Biological Treatment in Soils by Promoting Deep Rooting of Plants and Increased Soil Microbe Populations
- Site-Scale Green Storm Water Systems Are Intended to Be Primarily Nondischarge Systems, Therefore They Are Fundamentally Different From Low Impact Design (LID) and Different From End-of-the-Pipe Best Management Practices (BMP's)
Synergistic Integration of Green Storm Water Design in Design of Urban Sites
- Innovative Principles
Designing the Newest Approaches for Urban Sites – Case Studies
- Case Study - New Zero Runoff Enhanced Infiltration Research
- Case Study - High Rate Infiltration Systems in Dense Urban Areas in Atlanta, Chicago, Kansas City, New York City, and Washington, D.C.
- Case Study - High Rate Infiltration Systems Can Be Designed to Utilize Modified Site Soils
- Case Study - Recirculating Storm Water Treatment Using Sand/Peat Media in the Landscape for Sites Where You Need to Have a Stream Discharge
- Case Study – Integrating Multiple Design Solutions for a Site
