Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) Radar and What to Do About It

Course Description:

This one day course (divided into four 1.5 hour sessions) explores LPI radar from the interceptor's point of view. Starting from fundamental concepts which illustrate the constraints on LPI radar design and also on the design of intercept receivers, various stategies to intercept LPI signals at greater range are explored and examples are provided. The participant comes away with an in depth understanding of LPI radar and what to do about it from the SM/ELINT viewpoint.

Course Outline:

  • Radar Signal Evolution
  • Threat Identification Tables What is LPI Radar Today? (How low is low?)
  • Radar Fundamental Principle
  • Modern Radar Waveforms
  • Range Equations
  • Quantitative LPI Measure
  • Wideband ESM Receiver Strategy
  • Coherent and Non-Coherent Integration Compared
  • Partially Matching ESM to Radar
  • What about Frequency Agility?
  • Non-coherent Approach Frequency versus Time: Environment and RSSR Sweeps
  • Bandwidth choices for LFM
  • Wigner-Hough Transform
  • Time-Frequency Transforms
  • Cross-Correlation Method
  • Implementation Problems
  • ELINT and the Future of LPI Radar
