Social Determinants of Health Conference

Conference focusing socioeconomic and social factors impacting health and health equity in Australia.

Five years on from the WHO's Commission on the Social Determinants of Health, Closing the Gap Within a Generation, the report is now achieving growing prominence in Australia's health policy setting. In March 2013, the Senate released its response to the report and recommended that the federal government adopt the WHO report's recommendations to act on social determinants of health and equity issues. In all areas of policy, the report recommends that effective action be taken to manage the social factors that contribute to a person's health and encourages social inclusion initiatives aimed at reducing health inequity.

The Social Determinants of Health conference on the 10th and 11th December at the Sydney Harbour Marriott Hotel will bring together health, social services and public policy organisations to discuss how social determinants affect the health of the nation and to consider how policy decisions can be targeted to reduce health inequities. The agenda will facilitate much needed discussion on new approaches to manage social determinants of health and bridge the gap in health between the socially disadvantaged and the broader Australian population.

The impact of social, economic and environmental factors on people's health is an immense challenge for health policy and planning in Australia. Education, employment, social security, housing and transport all have important consequences for health outcomes.
