About Justice and Public Safety Landscape for FY 2011:

For fiscal year 2011, state governors’ recommended budgets indicate that 6.3 percent of all state and local spending ($77.6 billion) will be on Justice and Public Safety (JPS) and Homeland Security (HS). In his 2011 budget request, President Obama outlined nearly $5.3 billion in state and local JPS and HS spending from the federal government. Both JPS and HS markets are expected to continue towards interoperability, information sharing, and infrastructure security.

INPUT’s upcoming INPUT/Output report, FY 2011 Governors’ Budgets: Public Safety Spending, presents some of the top public safety agencies around the country, and provides insight into their potential spending. The report also highlights some of the governors’ expected public safety IT initiatives that will likely take place in FY 2011.

For public safety agencies and vendors, federal earmarks are the lifeblood of many IT projects. A second upcoming report (July 2010) will address these earmarks, plot the landscape of these special requests, and highlight a variety of public safety IT projects in the field of land/mobile radio communications, data sharing and information exchange, accountability/asset management, and other surveillance/detection initiatives.
