The Internet of Things: Connected Government

The number of “things” connected to the Internet has outpaced the number of people connected to the Internet since 2008. Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group estimates these connected “things” – mobile devices, parking meters, medical devices and more - will grow to 50 billion by 2020. The Internet of Things (IoT) is here and the implications for government are many.

The Internet, this network of networks that once connected people around the world, can now link roads that sense looming traffic jams, electrical grids that automatically react to spiking energy demands or medical devices that remind patients to take prescription medicine. The massive amount of information being collected from devices connected by sensors, software defined networks and other smart technology creates countless opportunities for agencies to tap into this data, resulting in greater efficiencies, increased savings, higher employee productivity, improved situational awareness and improved service to citizens. But as more and more essential devices and services are connected to the Internet, agencies become more vulnerable to both internal and external threats, leading to the misuse of personal data or even worse, physical harm to citizens.

Please join us for The Internet of Things: Connected Government, to be held on August 6, 2014 at the Mayflower Renaissance Hotel, Washington, D.C. This first-of-its-kind event will bring together more than 100 IT and management professionals from across federal, state and local government to discuss the next evolution of the cloud and its promise for the future of government services.

Attendees will learn:

  • The current and future implications of connecting government services through IoT
  • What early IoT programs are already underway and what they hope to achieve
  • How companies can develop IoT services that help improve government services
  • Privacy, security and ownership issues that hold back the promise of IoT
  • How software-as-a-service, infrastructure-as-a-service and platform-as-a-service has made it possible for agencies to harvest and scale the massive amounts of data collected from devices hanging off the Internet
  • Other public policy implications of IoT
