The threat of homegrown violent extremist activities gives cause to reinforce existing efforts to inform private sector partners who work within and around federal facilities regarding the current threat environment and successful security practices that can mitigate or prevent the occurrence or severity of a violent act.  The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of Infrastructure Protection (IP), the Federal Protective Service (FPS), and the Office of Intelligence and Analysis are conducting joint outreach that will provide an Active Shooter Preparedness Workshop and share relevant information to owners and operators of facilities that occupy space in or adjacent to federal buildings.  This information sharing outreach and workshop will provide an overview of incidents perpetrated by homegrown violent extremists (HVE), self-radicalized persons, and the current threat environment, in addition to details regarding the available tools, resources, and best practices designed to protect, prevent, and mitigate the consequences of  an active shooter or hostile intruder incidents. 

A Unique Training Opportunity

The National Protection and Programs Directorate Office of Infrastructure Protection and the Federal Protective Service within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are hosting a one-day Security Workshop to enhance awareness of, and response to, an active shooter event:

• Educating participants on the history of active shooter events;
  
• Describing common behavior, conditions, and situations associated with active shooters; and
  
• Fostering communication between critical infrastructure owners and operators and local emergency response teams. This course includes discussions of interoperability, communications protocols, and best practices for planning, preparedness, and response.

Building Emergency Planning Capabilities

The event will also describe how to incorporate key elements of successful incident management into planning efforts including:

• Communicating with and accounting for employees;
• Building familiarity with local responders and knowing their capabilities;
• Coordinating with first responders before, during, and after an incident; and
• Integrating public affairs into incident management.

 Who should Participate?

This event is open to:   

• Corporate and facility security professionals from the private and public sectors;
• Supervisory first responders; and
• Homeland security representitives.
