Issues to be addressed during the webinar include:

  • Trends and drivers in federal data center consolidation activities and the obstacles that hinder their progress
  • Current federal data center landscape
  • Technologies and best practices for data center consolidation initiatives

About Federal Data Center Consolidation:

The federal government saw a 154 percent increase in the number of federal data centers from FY 1998 to FY 2009; it has recently been under fire for its IT infrastructure sprawl. In February 2010, Federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra, announced the commencement of the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI), which is meant to quell the growth in the number data centers and to launch efforts toward reduced energy usage, IT cost reductions, and increased information security.

The federal government currently spends nearly 30 percent of its IT budget on IT infrastructure, while spending only 36 percent on IT to support mission –critical areas. The goal of FDCCI is to make infrastructure spending more cost effective and shift some of the savings to IT support of the said mission-critical areas.

To achieve consolidation goals, agencies will be employing the following consolidation approaches: decommissioning, centralization and site consolidation, virtualization, and cloud computing. At the same time, agencies must overcome the challenges of an abbreviated planning and implementation timeline, lack of upfront funding, technical obstacles, and cultural and political roadblocks.

Key market drivers currently shaping the consolidation of federal IT infrastructures include::

  • The need to reduce energy consumption and real estate
  • The drive to decrease expenditures on hardware, software, and operations, and employ more efficient technologies
  • The desire to improve federal IT security posture
