HIV/AIDS Continuing Education for Healthcare Professionals

This event qualifies for 3 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits

Washington D.C. is one of the areas hardest hit by HIV in the U.S., with an epidemic on par with some developing nations. In D.C., approximately 2.7% of the population is living with HIV (>1% is considered a ‘generalized epidemic’), and D.C. has the highest AIDS diagnosis rate of any state in the U.S. The Council of the District of Columbia has identified medical provider education as a critical need to help address HIV, and has mandated that healthcare providers licensed in D.C. receive 3 hours of continuing medical education in HIV/AIDS, beginning with the 2014 period.

This half-day program is designed to provide instruction on the impact of HIV in populations of different ages (particularly the senior population) and on persons of different racial and ethnic backgrounds.  In addition, the program will educate attendees on the general risk to all individuals of HIV infection, provide guidance as to how to inform all patients about HIV/AIDS and how to appropriately monitor all patients for potential exposure to HIV. Finally, the program will educate the attendees as to the use, benefits and risks associated with pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis treatment. This program is designed to fulfill the requirements for licensure of healthcare professionals in the Washington D.C.\
