Finding Your Records Management Crew: How To Muster Up the Resources To Make Your Project Successful

The ability to surround yourself with the right (and available) personnel resources to plan the Records Management voyage is critical to success in exploring uncharted territory. Pirates and crewmates abound: Who are your advocates, who are your adversaries, and who is remaining neutral? It is with that information that you will have to consider with whom to establish alliances, and who might try to plunder your treasure. Plus we’ll uncover the external resources that may not be obvious on the surface, but can assist you in your efforts to discovery new Records Management land.

What Is RM-U?

Welcome to Records Management University, a unique and wildly-popular continuing-education online course dedicated to serving Records Management professionals of all levels, now it its third semester. Free registration is now open for the Spring 2016 semester. Why should you register? Just ask any of over 3,000 RM & IG professionals just like you who have already joined us, and they’ll tell you RM-U shouldn’t be missed!

Let RM-U Dean of Records Management Mitch Farbstein lead you through this educational, informational, and fun continuing-expertise, webinar-based course, which will spotlight the latest news, innovations, theory and concepts, critical industry issues, best practices, tips and tricks, how-to’s, and new advances in technology in Records Management, Information Governance, and Information Lifecycle Management for everyone, experts and novices alike. Each of the 6 classes will focus on a different critical Records Management topic and last about an hour.

As these sessions are interactive and have opportunities for questions and comments, we encourage everyone to attend live. However, we know not everyone can. As long as you register for the course, recorded versions of any session will be available for on-demand viewing after the class is over. You do not have to have attended any previous class to attend any future class, so join us for one, a few, or all classes… even if the semester has already started!

Attention Records Managers: Each RM-U session is pre-approved for 1 CRM Certification Maintenance Credit (CMP) from the Institute of Certified Records Managers up to 6 CRM credits(one for each class) and/or 6 Information Governance Professionals (IGP) credits (by taking all 6 classes only). Credits are available by attending live or viewing the session on-demand.

What We'll Cover

This semester, RM-U will take a journey across the Records Management implementation seas, and we’ll enlist the help of the world’s greatest ocean-faring explorers to help explain the processes in making your Records Management assessment, purchase, installation, implementation, update, or upgrade successful in “The Vast and Uncharted Seas of Records Management”!

Let us – and brave explorers throughout history – give you a guide to navigating your way through the maze of planning, projects, approvals, and milestones you need to prepare yourself for before you evaluate, implement, upgrade, or consider changing the Records Management system, policy, or procedure in your organization.

Understand The Commandments of the Records Management Sea: What Are the Governing Rules You Must Consider

Your real understanding of the governing rules for Records Management – and identifying who ultimately is the responsible party for establishing and policing the policies – insulates and legitimizes the Records Manager’s position in the organization. As you set off for the New World, we’ll discuss the critical difference between job security and job exposure when things go right and when things go wrong. Because, after all, Columbus never found the East Indies. .

Building Your Records Management Ship: Putting Your Technology Together
(The Zheng He Class) | Tuesday April 19, 2p ET

As you continue on your transoceanic journey across the Seven Seas, you’re not going to get very far without a sturdy ship. Gathering up the right nuts, bolts, and other critical structural materials for building a sea-worthy Records Management vessel is critical to the success of your mission. Records Management is a long voyage and a long term commitment, for you, your financial backers, and for your crew. The ship has to be solid and upfront preparation is essential. And if a leak is ultimately discovered, a greater understanding of recovery methods won’t force the Captain – you – to go down with the ship..

Navigating Your Records Management Journey: Avoiding Potential Turbulent Seas
(The Vasco de Gama Class) | Tuesday May 3, 2p ET

Even the greatest amount of a good Captain’s preparation only gets you out off the Records Management dock. Once you’ve left port, now you’re faced with the real voyage into uncharted seas. Unpredictable weather, marauding pirates, deadly sea serpents, a poorly-designed sexton, and all things unimaginable (like falling off the edge of the Earth) are waiting for you on your expedition. The more knowledge you have of potential obstacles – and the more experience you can glean from explorers who have made the quest themselves before – the more likely you will reach your port-of-call safely, successfully, and under budget..

Returning to all aboard back to safe harbor demonstrates your elementary navigation capabilities in previously-explored Records Management seas. But what’s next? What sirens, challenges, and uncharted quadrants of the briny deep are now calling your name, El Capitán? Let’s discuss where your next venture will – and should – take you next in the expansive seas of Records Management. The Sea Gods are watching you and hopefully on your side!
