Periodic monitoring and inspecting of structures and roadways are among the procedures developed to keep the public safe. However, as recent bridge collapses and other disasters have demonstrated, these inspections are far from perfect. Oftentimes, environmental or budgetary factors prevent timely or thorough inspections, which can lead to oversights. One way to combat these risky lapses is the use of UAS for inspection.

To date UAS have been used to inspect buildings, bridges, electrical utilities and other structures that can be difficult or dangerous for humans to access. UAS mounted sensors can, in some cases, detect deterioration or vulnerabilities that are not visible to the human eye. Such capabilities will allow those charged with maintaining these critical structures to repair damage before human lives are put at risk or a major disruption is endured.
