Dr. Loftin is an internationally known scholar in the field of virtual reality. His specific expertise is in using advanced software technologies to develop three-dimensional, virtual environments for training astronauts and soldiers to undertake a variety of tasks, such as reporting failed equipment. He spent 23 years at the University of Houston as a professor and chair of the Department of Computer Science and director of the NASA Virtual Environments Research Institute. He then went to Old Dominion University in Virginia to establish graduate degree programs in modeling and simulation as director of simulation programs at the Virginia Modeling, Analysis & Simulation Center and as a professor of electrical and computer engineering, and of computer science. He serves on numerous advisory committees and panels sponsored by governmental and professional organizations. He has served since 2007 as a member of the National Academies’ Panel on Arms and Armaments and previously served on the National Science Advisory Committee for the Desert Research Institute, which was assembled under the auspices of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Since 2006, he has served as associate editor of Computers in Science and Engineering. Dr. Loftin has frequently served as a consultant to both industry and government in the areas of modeling and simulation, advanced training technologies, and scientific/engineering data visualization. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 technical publications and has conducted more than 180 invited lectures and other presentations. Additionally, he has served as principal investigator or major participant in scores of grants and contracts totaling millions of dollars.
