Foundation Preparation and Treatment for Dam Construction

This webinar will address a wide range of foundation preparation and treatment methods applicable to construction of new dams, rehabilitation of existing dams, and enlargement of existing dams. Topics to be covered include:

1) treatment of surface rock exposures in dam foundations,
2) rock grouting,
3) treatment of foundation soils,
4) foundation seepage barrier walls and upstream blankets, and
5) foundation seepage collection and control methods.

Speaker and Presenter Information

John W. France, PE, D.WRE, is currently a Vice President and National Technology Leader for Dams for URS Corporation. He is based in the Denver Office of URS. He received his BS degree in civil engineering from Cornell University in 1973 and received an MS degree in geotechnical engineering from the same institution in 1976. Mr. France has 39 years of consulting engineering experience, during which time he has worked on hundreds of civil engineering projects. He has been responsible for engineering services for the analysis, design, and construction of embankment and roller compacted concrete dams and their appurtenant structures. He has served on Consultant Review Boards for the Bureau of Reclamation for several dam safety rehabilitation projects, he has served on Advisory Boards for four Corps of Engineers dam safety projects, and he is serving on Advisory Boards for BC Hydro for dam safety studies and modifications of three of its dams. Mr. France serves on the several committees for ASDSO, and he has served as the private sector member of the National Dam Safety Review Board.
