Safe, Secure and Efficient Shipping on Clean Oceans: A Primer on the International Maritime Organization
Course Description: The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the United Nations' specialized agency responsible for the safety and security of shipping, and the prevention of marine pollution by ships. It is the preeminent forum for global maritime safety, security, pollution prevention, human considerations and legal affairs, as well as facilitation of ship to port interface, technical issues and audit schemes. But how did this organization start, and how does it conduct its work? This webinar will endeavor to answer these questions, by presenting and introduction and overview.
Speaker and Presenter Information
CAPT Rich Delpizzo, USNR (Ret.) has over 30 years’ experience working in ship design, construction and operations, technical review, regulatory requirements application, Navy project management and defense acquisition. He has worked for the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) at its New York, New Jersey and Washington, DC offices. Since 2004, he led the Washington DC Naval Engineering office as its Senior Managing Principal Engineer; in January 2010, he was promoted to Manager of Government Operations. In August 2013, he took on the additional role of Manager for US LNG Development and Regulation. In addition to chairing ASNE’s Professional Development Committee, Rich serves as Chair for both SNAME Ship’s Machinery Committee and Panel M-45 on Fuel Cells. Furthermore, he Chairs the Naval Ship Classification Association, and serves as ABS representative to NATO’s International Naval Safety Association (INSA). He has served in the U.S. Navy Reserve for 28 years, retiring in 2012 as Captain.
