Lighthouses of San Francisco Bay
Please join docent Warren Riley for an illustrated talk on the lighthouses of San Francisco Bay. The talk is presented in the Sailor`s Den in the Visitor Center (corner of Hyde and Jefferson Streets).
Following the discovery of gold in 1848, the Bay Area experienced one of the most remarkable expansions in modern history. Almost overnight, San Francisco`s population exploded. Most goods and people moved by sea.
During the latter half of the 19th century, the men and women of the lighthouse service, and the light and fog signals they tended, directed ships to safe passage and often provided life-saving services. These services played a critical role in the growth of a new state.
