How to Stay One Step Ahead of DDoS Threats

Today, cyberattacks around the world are becoming more prevalent and complex. Last year, Akamai successfully defended against a 1.3 Tbps DDoS attack --the largest DDoS outbreak ever recorded. Hackers use DDoS and web application attacks to render IT systems inoperable, steal data, and deface websites which are extremely difficult to defend against. Higher Education institutions are prime targets for these attacks.

The introduction of a massive amount of Internet of Things (IoT) connected devices further complicates cybersecurity protocols. Armed with massive armies of botnets, hackers use DDoS amplification attacks to quickly render IT systems inoperable. The changing landscape also affects the magnitude of attacks. Using toolsets such as malicious stressor sites, attackers can easily overwhelm even a large institution's IT infrastructure. Attackers can also use valid servers and valid responses as weapons, making it difficult for the target to identify malicious actions.
