Gender Stereotyping: What You Need to Know to Prevent Discrimination Complaints in Your Agency
Gender stereotyping isn’t a new form of discrimination, but novel issues surrounding this topic keep popping up. And from a supervisor’s reaction to a female subordinate’s crying to concerns raised by a transgendered individual, federal EEO complaints reflect how it has evolved in the workplace.
Through an analysis of case law and recent trends, federal employment law experts Gary Gilbert and Ernest Hadley will show you how to identify gender stereotyping as a distinct form of discrimination under Title VII, plus provide authoritative insight into what you need to do to avoid these complaints in your agency.
You’ll learn why making personnel decisions based on generalizations involving gender is prohibited, and how to identify situations in which your decisions could be perceived as gender stereotyping, such as:
- Assuming a man can work alone on a loading dock,
but a woman shouldn’t have to do so
- Disciplining a woman who is late because of caretaking
needs, but not disciplining men who are late for other
reasons
- Assuming a woman who is pregnant is not going to be
as devoted to her job and should not have training
opportunities
Plus, Mr. Gilbert and Mr. Hadley will explain why EEO complaints should not be dismissed solely on the basis that some of the alleged conduct is based on sexual orientation, and how to avoid liability for hostile environment claims that involve gender stereotyping. What’s more, you’ll have the opportunity to get authoritative answers to your specific questions!
